COAST and BEACHES

There are several fine shingle and sandy beaches dotted along Croatia’s coastline whose clean  beaches, shallow waters and great amenities make them popular especially with families with young children. Here is a short list of some of them but you can usually find a fine stretch of shingle beach near your accommodation.

• The white shingle beaches at Rabac (Istria):
lovely clean beaches with inviting shallow waters.

• The Vela Plaza (‘Great Beach’) at Baska, on the island of Krk: a mixture of sand and shingle flanked
by water-slides, bars and cafes.

• The main city beach at Crikvenica: a favourite for families, with a volleyball area, boat-rental and
easy-access to local amenities.

• Ivan Dolac, on the remote southern side of the island of Hvar has some lovely shingle beaches
with clear shallow waters.

• Stoncica Bay, Vis has a lovely sandy beach and is one of the prettiest of the island’s many fine bays
and swimming spots.

• The white pebble beach around Brela: part of a 6km-long stretch of beautiful white pebble beaches
backed by pine forests and shady promenades. Ideal for young children.

• The sandy beaches of Lopud island: A short ferry ride from Dubrovnik, this is where the locals come
to soak up the sun. The long sandy beach at Sunj is one of the country’s best- although be warned
that half of it is given over to naturists!

Croatian beaches are highly praised for their high standards of cleanliness both on and off-shore. Around
80 beaches in Croatia have been awarded this status: http://www.blueflag.org/blueflag/2004/Croatia
